In den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg begann der Ost-West-Konflikt und man sah in der Sowjetunion eine Bedrohung. Die westeuropäischen Staaten des Brüsseler Paktes baten die USA um militärischen Beistand. Zusammen mit Kanada einigte man sich auf die Gründung eines Militärbündnisses.
Die NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) wurde daraufhin im Jahr 1949 als Verteidigungsbündnis gegen die Sowjetunion von 10 westeuropäischen Staaten Großbritannien, Frankreich, Niederlande, Belgien, Italien, Dänemark, Luxemburg, Norwegen, Island und Portugal zusammen mit den Initiatoren USA und Kanada gegründet. Die im gleichen Jahr neu gegründete Bundesrepublik Deutschland trat 1955 bei.
Die in Neu-Ulm ansässigen NATO Sergeants gründeten 1965 einen Club, der bis 1990 Bestand hatte. Er löste sich kurz nach dem Mauerfall und kurz vor dem Abzug der Amerikaner aus Neu-Ulm auf. Der lateinische Leitsatz „Vigilia pretium libertatis“ fasst das Leitmotiv der Nato zusammen: Wachsamkeit ist der Preis der Freiheit.
Auf dem Krug ist die Deutsche Flagge zwischen den Flaggen der USA und Kanada zu sehen. Die Kompassrose der vier Haupthimmelsrichtungen definiert das Aufgabengebiet, für das sich die NATO verantwortlich sieht.
The East-West conflict began in the years following the World War II and the Soviet Union was seen as a threat. The western European countries of the Brussels Pact requested military support from the USA. Together with Canada, the formation of a military alliance was agreed.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) was thus founded in 1949 as a military defence alliance against the Soviet Union. Ten western European countries: Great Britain, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland and Portugal signed the treaty with the initiators USA and Canada. They were joined in 1955 by the Federal Republic of Germany, newly founded in the same year.
In 1965 the NATO Sergeants stationed in Neu-Ulm formed a club which existed until 1990. It was disbanded shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and before the departure of American troops from Neu-Ulm. The Latin motto “Vigilia pretium libertatis” summarizes the guiding principle of NATO: Vigilance is the price of liberty. On the jug, the German flag is depicted between the flags of Canada and the USA. The compass rose showing the four cardinal directions symbolises the extent of the assignment for which NATO sees itself responsible.
